Access the podcast here now on listen on multiple podcast platforms.

PocketConfidant Podcasts are episodes of about twenty minutes. It is the type of content where students and guests (education leaders, students having great insights to share, teachers, parents and many others) can share their experiences, tips and advice. Every subject will be discussed with coaching expertise and the latest research and scientific insights. In addition, anyone can benefit by listening and learning how to use the valuable supporting tools provided, such as reflecting better on your issues, asking yourself good questions and increasing your self-knowledge to be more proficient in handling academic and professional tasks. The podcasts will allow us, students, to reflect on our issues, understand and work on our own action plans using technology, supported by reminders and videos, expert and student coaching. It is all about finding and crafting our own way to improving reflections, attitudes, behaviors and actions and then adapting our outcomes to our needs, our learning, and what’s best for us. Each podcast will focus on issues that students face in their academic journey and will provide different perspectives on the issue.

Podcast

The current podcast is about “self-promotion”. The term “promotion” comes from latin language “promovere”, the combination of “pro” (in front, ahead, in advance) and “moveo” (to move, to affect, to provoke). Hence, the term “self-promotion”, could be understood as the act of moving ourselves forward, advocating for ourselves, letting others know who we are, how we think, feel and how we want to engage with them, or even what we have to offer as a benefit, contribution or help.

The term self-promotion may hold a negative meaning for some and might even be considered narcissistic. However, it is positive and impactful when we are using ourselves (our identity, our personality, our beliefs, our talents, our story etc.) to communicate a message that is important to us. This is what comedians, actors, politicians, entrepreneurs, artists are doing to reach us and gain our interest when they communicate.

There are obviously many times when it is appropriate to self-promote. The question to ask ourselves is whether we are doing this in a way that is personally positive and useful and adapted to the situation. When is it important to promote ourselves to others? What do we use this to achieve? How do we promote ourselves in a positive way that gets people’s attention and has them want to know us better? When can we cause ourselves harm because we are just too self-absorbed and others are not interested?

Important questions to ask ourselves before talking about our gifts and accomplishments are:

  • What is my goal? What do I want to obtain through self-promotion?
  • What message do I want to communicate? What’s important for the other to understand?
  • What are my values? What are the limits of my self-promotion?
  • What thoughts, emotions, reactions or responses do I want to create from others?
  • When might talking too much about myself be a problem for me?

In this podcast, you will hear from Maria Elorza Saralegui, a student in journalism and illustration and from Isla, an education coach. Maria is a student and an artist; you can check her work here on her website. The topic of self-promotion is a very important one for her, which is why we are having this conversation today. Following the podcast, you can access the self-coaching technology here for free to start working on this topic in order to learn how, when and where you want to promote yourself to achieve the results that you need and want in your professional and personal life. Maria’s art will be accompanying you soon in the self-coaching experience as, like the picture of this blog post that is part of a series of sketches of illustrations of PocketConfidant.

Join the podcasts as they will help us to empower more and more students by students and grow together, no matter where students are in the world, what they do or where they stand in their academic, professional and personal journey.
